Ruthven believed it to be the closest relative of the Guajira stubfoot toad (''Atelopus carrikeri''). ''Atelopus ignescens'' was formerly abundant along streams, but has not been seen since 1988. It inhabited cloud forests, humid sub-páramo bushland, and páramo grassland, and bred in streams.
